Antibiotic use in Veterinary Medicine

Antibiotics are essential drugs in treating disease in humans and animals. However, their increasing usage has led to the development of antibacterial resistance in many types of bacteria. The World Health Organisation has stated that antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security and economic development today. This is a ‘One Health’ issue as antibiotic resistance in the bacteria that cause disease in our pets also affects the resistance of bacteria that cause disease in us. For the sake of human health we have to all work together to reduce unnecessary antibiotic usage. Recent studies have shown that many diseases where antibiotics have been traditionally used in both animals and humans are actually not responsive to antibiotics as there is no bacterial cause to the disease. Examples are Canine infectious respiratory disease complex (Kennel Cough), cystitis in cats and most cases of diarrhoea. Tweed House is working to PROTECT our antibiotics. There are times that you may feel that antibiotics are necessary, but we refuse to prescribe them even if your pet has had them for the same condition in the past or they have been prescribed by another vet before. This is because new information is becoming available about the appropriateness of antibiotics for various conditions. We will not withhold antibiotics when they are indicated. For further information please see the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and Small Animal Medical Society Guide that we follow here. You may also receive a non prescription form.

Coping with the loss of a pet

Our pets are special to us and to many they are considered part of the family. Mourning the loss of a dear pet is to be expected and people are affected by this in different ways. You are not alone and we are here to help you in the decision making for your pet and also in the difficult time afterwards. It is perfectly natural to feel guilty at this time as it is a normal part of the grieving process. If you have any concerns or worries, please do discuss them with us. There is also help available from the pet bereavement support service available on 08000966606.

There is more information in this guide: Coping with the loss of your pet.

And this is a lovely resource for children: Time to say goodbye.
